BT’s New Home Hub 4

I was really excited when I was invited to attend the BT’s Launch for their New Home Hub 4, designed to offer broadband users its most reliable wireless signal ever, as not only would I get the chance at a sneak peak at this new technology but I would get the opportunity to go up the well known BT Tower, which is not usually open to the public!

Now I am not that great with lifts, I’ve had a bit of a phobia for as long as I can remember, but I have tried hard to defeat this fear and I was really tested by the BT Tower! The lifts travel at an amazing 7m per second allowing people to get to the top in 30 seconds. The main structure is 177 metres (581 ft) tall, with a further section of aerial rigging bringing the total height to 189 metres (620 ft) – so if you’re not good with fast lifts and heights don’t visit!

I will admit that the view from the BT Tower was amazing and hard not to get distracted by but we were there to learn about the new home hub from BT which uses dual band technology. For BT it’s “all about quality of service” with them wanting to provide the best service possible for their customers. It combines Smart Wireless and concurrent dual band wireless (dual stream 802.1n MIMO technology simultaneously at 2.4GHz and 5GHz), which helps avoid interference to give the most dependable connection.

A thoughtful feature of the new home hub is it’s size! At just 116mm high, 236mm wide x 31mm deep, means it will fit through most letter boxes which is so much better than having to arrange a day off work or a run to the local post depo to collect a package. I really think this shows that BT considers not just the function of their products, but how customers interact with the product as a whole and wanting to save them time and effort they have developed this slim lined product. This gets a thumbs up from me.

Talking of thumbs, this home hub comes with green fingers of it’s own, with a 100% recycled cardboard box with non-petrochemical inks & the latest intelligent power management technology ensuring the power save mode runs when not in use

The hub comes with a “smart setup” which makes installation simple with any device without having to load a separate CD – those things are always getting lost, am I right? I watched a demonstration of the set up and it looked pretty intuitive, including a parental settings section allowing parents to set up safe browsing for their families as an important part of the initial installation.

John Petter, managing director of BT’s Consumer division, said: “This is our best ever home hub. We’re once again providing our customers with cutting edge technology to give them a better connection than any other major UK broadband provider. It is this innovative smart dual-band technology that avoids interference for an ultra-reliable connection. It’s at the heart of our broadband packages.”

The BT Hub 4 is to be available via BT Broadband and BT Infinity packages over the coming months. If you are already with BT you can take on the new home hub with a renewal of a contract, or a new one, or simply purchase the hub for the special price of £35 from bt.com

Just a cheeky extra we were given the opportunity to have a sneak peak at the Home Hub 5 (picture above) – I can’t wait to see what additional functionality this will bring to the broadband marketplace!
