Review: Orwell Health Organic Soybean Pastas
Over the last few years, I have found myself learning more and more about alternative and free-from products due to my husband’s decision to go grain-free in order to alleviate symptoms of his condition hidradenitis suppurativa. When Orwell Health got in touch offering us the chance to try out their soy pasta products I was excited to give them a go!
The soy pasta products are made from sustainable 100% organic raw soybeans making them high in essential nutrients such as protein, phosphorus and calcium. They are low in sugar and fat and a peptide naturally found in soybeans helps to boost absorption of nutrients to keep your digestive system in check.
The range is made up of three types of soybeans: yellow, green and black with each colour coming in spaghetti and fettuccine versions. We were sent a packet of their yellow soybean spaghetti and a packet of their green soybean fettuccine to try.
The yellow soybean pasta is made from 100% raw organic yellow soybeans making it a great option for anyone wanting to lower their intake of sugar and fat. Yellow soybeans have many nutritional benefits; containing 20 different amino acids as well as isoflavones and a fantastic source of vegetable protein.
The green soybean pasta is also high in vegetable protein and boasts antioxidant properties as well as being a great source of fibre, vitamin B, and vitamin E. The pasta is gluten-free and, of course, suitable for vegetarians. There is no oil or fat in either pasta, it’s just 100% soybean!
You might think that the pasta needs some sort of strange cooking but no, it cooks just like ordinary pasta. Simply place in boiling water for a few minutes until the pasta is soft then drain and serve with whatever takes your fancy. There are some great recipes on the Orwell Health blog for inspiration.
So, how does it taste? I have found that both the yellow soybean pasta and green soybean pasta have a pleasant nutty flavour not too dissimilar of normal wheat pasta. The texture is a little different being more grainy but not in a bad way. You can eat it just like regular pasta; it softens and can easily be wrapped around a fork etc.
I have really enjoyed trialling the Orwell Health organic soybean pasta and found the products to be tasty, versatile and fantastic gluten-free alternative. I would certainly recommend them to anyone looking to avoid grains and award them 5 out of 5 stars.
