2020 trends in contemporary furniture

Keeping up with trends fashion is a challenge. Everything changes quickly and, oftentimes, for reasons that seem unclear. Although this evident for clothes, accessories and footwear, it’s less clear when it comes to furniture. Perhaps it’s because in the latter sector these changes are slower. Or perhaps because they often take place in the privacy of our homes.

Navigating the world of contemporary furniture isn’t easy, not least because of the intrinsic characteristics of this clearly-defined style. Being a set of different styles and sub styles, contemporary by its nature comprises a careful blend of modernity, vintage, comfort, eccentricity and above all, good taste.

Now let’s take a look at this year’s trends.

The contemporary-style kitchen

After at least a decade in which open spaces have dominated, we are now returning to a more clearly defined delimitation of interior spaces.

The kitchen has become separated off from the living room, with the aim of improving home comfort by keeping out kitchen smells and noises created when preparing breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Ideal furniture for contemporary kitchens is practical and easy to clean. It can be harmonised with that of the rest of the house or played around with to give the kitchen its own distinctive character by using specific colours and materials. Furniture can be a chance to bring some luxury and individuality to your kitchen space with made to order dining chairs or bar stools for example.

When available space won’t let you create a separate room for the kitchen, the open-plan space can still be separated off to form separate lounge and food areas by using furniture as a sort of partition, by painting the walls in a different way, and by using furnishing accessories to give a distinctive character to the different interiors.

Modern furniture is designed to be “smart”

Furniture with clean lines, characterised by white and/or black, continues to be in vogue because it can give a sense of order, even in very small homes.

It must be said that equipped walls, bookcases, and kitchens are becoming increasingly popular, featuring a modern design, but one which clearly favours the texture of the materials (wood, stone, metal).

The feature that all modern/contemporary furniture has in common is intelligence, which is why the latest concept furniture is sometimes referred to as ‘smart’.

This ranges from home automation, which actively participates in the management of your home by monitoring household appliances and more besides, to the smart use of spaces that haven’t been used before. For example, containers under sofas and beds or in the lower parts of kitchens.

Minimalism is also greatly appreciated nowadays. But there’s an increasing need to take advantage of every inch of available domestic space.

Contemporary style: sobriety meets scenographic effects

Unlike modern style, contemporary style isn’t guided by the principle of “less is more”. Rather, it’s characterised by eccentric furniture and scenographic combinations, and this is especially so in 2020.

In a private home or in public settings furnished in a contemporary style you can find classic-styled chairs around a metal-and-glass table, while the walls sport eye-catching wallpaper.

Another example of contemporary style might be a wall with exposed brickwork and a concrete floor contrasting with a couple of designer armchairs set round an antique coffee table

The trend in restaurants, gastro-pubs, night clubs and hotels is increasingly to create spaces that capture attention. And contemporary style is the most suitable because it lets you mix a range of contrasting objects and furniture to create visually dazzling aesthetics.

Those responsible for managing one of the activities listed above must always think that furniture can positively or negatively influence the experience of their clientele and, therefore, impact directly upon its success.

As already mentioned at the beginning of this article, choosing fashionable furniture isn’t easy. That’s why it’s well worth seeking out the guidance of experts in contemporary furniture if you want to avoid wasting your money pointlessly.

Finally, one last tip: always give a personal touch when furnishing your home or venue.

  1. I am sharing this with my fiancé! He wants an open plan kitchen but I do not, mainly for the reasons you’ve listed! Plus I like to hide in there when they drive me crazy!

    Great interior advice here x
