4 Tips for Moving Home Successfully

When you want to sell your home and move successfully, it pays to put some thought and planning into it. This way, it will go much more smoothly than if you do so haphazardly and just hope for the best.

Here are 4 tips for planning and executing a successful home move.

Declutter Before the Viewings

Before you’ve even sold your current home and moved out, it’s important to create a spacious environment for viewings.

While the ‘lived in’ feel is all well and good, potential buyers have enormous difficulty in visualising themselves in the space if personal items are strewn everywhere. At which point, it feels genuinely much like your home and never to be their home. Given that you’re selling them on the idea of it being theirs in the future, that’s not a good thing.

If you are able to move during lockdown – something discussed in this blog from Easy Access Self Storage – use self storage units to box up what isn’t needed for a while to get it out of view. The units from Easy Access are spacious enough to accommodate many possessions temporarily to clear items before a property viewing. They can later be transported to your new home on moving day.

Book Early for the Removals

The removals team will need to be booked as early as possible. Once your chosen firm is booked up for your planned moving date, it’ll be necessary to look elsewhere.

Choose a moving date that purposely avoids bank holidays and school holidays, and weekends too. These are by far the busiest moving days, so sidestepping them significantly increases the likelihood of getting the moving date booking that you are looking for.

Also, choose wisely because the removals will be taking care of your prized possessions. The cheapest quote is not necessarily the right one to pick.

Stay Organised

Moving successfully is all about staying organised and on top of everything that needs to get done.

Become a master of making efficient lists for different aspects of the move. Delegate to a partner where possible for tasks that they’re better suited to getting accomplished.

Use digital tools to help stay organised or have a dedicated A5 pad of paper and a pen to jot everything down. When using digital tools, a To-Do list app is going to be better than Excel for action items because it’s on your smartphone and always with you. Look into using Microsoft To-Do, Evernote, or Remember the Milk apps to keep track.

Prepare a Change of Address Checklist

Prepare a Change of Address Checklist that can be ready when you need it. Avoid losing mail and don’t rely 100 percent on Royal Mail redirecting all your mail because some things will inevitably slip through (though it’s good to set up anyway).

Let everyone important know well in advance when you’ll be moving and where to. This reduces the chances of things being lost.

Lastly, remember that you’ll need to sort out the utilities. They must be informed you are moving to avoid you being billed for someone else’s usage. It’s easy to forget this important step.
