5 reasons to take a short break this summer
Are you the type of person who enjoys a couple of holidays of at least a 7-14 days per year, or do you prefer having lots of short breaks and weekends away instead? Over the last few years my sister and I have revelled in getting away for weekend jaunts aboard to explore cities the likes of Budapest, Cologne, Barcelona and Stockholm enjoying soaking up as much culture and seeing as many sights as possible within 3 or 4 days. We are well versed in the art of planning a successful short break! Here are my top 5 reasons to take a short break instead of a longer holiday this summer.
1 Increased spontaneity
When you are booking a holiday of 7 or more days there can be a lot of planning involved and often you will need to book the holiday many months, or a year ahead which puts a limit on how spontaneous you can be. If you decide on Monday morning that you want to go away on Friday there’s usually little choice in destinations for a week long holiday, but there are bound to be loads of great last minute short breaks available for example just not indulge in a self catered cottage holiday in the beautiful English countryside?
2 Wider horizons
Although you might be able to spend more time exploring one destination if you are there for a longer period of time, wouldn’t you rather be jet setting all over the world than sticking to one place? Taking lots of short breaks, just like my sister and I, means that you can see lots of different places and you’re able to experience so many different cultures and see so many more sights in one year. I really love that I get to go to as many new places as I want and really soak in as much culture as possible in 12 months!
3 Greater enjoyment
According to the Telegraph short breaks make people happier! They have reported that Psychologists believe that people who use their holiday allowance in bursts rather than all in one go are happier, making more happy memories than those who holiday for an extended period of time. Holidaymakers are more appreciative of their time away from the office when they take more short trips than one big holiday and they suggest taking 4 holidays per year for the most benefits rather than seeing your enjoyment wane as you become accustomed to one or two holidays a year.
4 More breaks more often
Time really drags when you are looking forward to your holiday. I know that I am always looking at my calendar and working out how many weeks and days are left until I get to get away from the every day and do something different! Taking multiple short breaks during the year means that you have less waiting time between holidays and gives you more to look forward to! I know that our weekends away are a great way of breaking up the year into more survivable chunks rather than waiting for 6 months to come round until our next trip.
5 A health boost
Getting away from it all has fantastic benefits on your health. The Daily Mail has said that tests showing that going on holiday improves sleep, cuts blood pressure and even helps weight loss. I don’t think this information will come as a shock to most people as I am sure you, like I, feel more rested and stress-free when having just had a holiday. Imagine how good you will feel if you take multiple short holidays per year allowing you to bask in relaxation and fun, ultimately giving your mind and body the change to re-charge.
