5 Ways to use Essential Oils

I have been a fan of essential oils for many years using them to fragrance my home, create relaxing atmospheres and as an ingredient in homemade beauty products like sugar scrubs.

Essential oils have many health benefits including helping you to sleep better, improve your mood, reduce anxiety and depression as well as boosting energy levels. If you’re interested in incorporating essential oils into your life for the benefits above check out these 5 easy ways to do just that.

Diffusion

One of the most common ways to start using essential oils is diffusion. There are many different diffusers on the market which will allow you to disperse the oils so the aroma fills the air. Why not try turning on your diffuser when you’re getting up in the morning with some stimulating aromas or relaxing and sedative oils at bedtime.

Inhale

If you prefer to get your essential oil aroma straight from the bottle then this is perfectly fine! You can inhale straight from the bottle or apply oil to a handkerchief or use absorbent jewellery (terracotta or lava stone) to carry the scent around with you all day.

Alternatively, combine a few drops of oil with water and pour the mixture in a spray bottle and spritz the soft furnishings around your home. You can also make a facial steam by adding a few drops to hot water.

Topically

Essential oils are applied topically via lotions, creams and compresses. The most common places to apply oils are the bottoms of feet, chest, temple and pulse points. Not all oils, or brands of oils, are safe to apply topically so make sure to check before applying them to your skin!

It’s great to combine essential oils with lotions as not only do you get the benefits of the oil but also as you massage it into your skin you will be increasing circulation, helping to fade scar tissue and regenerate skin cells.

Baths

Who doesn’t love a soak in a nice hot bath at the end of a long day? Boost your bath by adding 2-5 drops of essential oil mixed with Epsom salt to the water. Essential oil baths can help treat circulatory problems, dissolve stress, pain, insomnia and nervous tension.

Massage

Having a massage is relaxing and does wonders for your mental and emotional state. It is easy to make your own massage oil using essential oils; simply add 15-20 drops of essential oil to 1/2 a cup of carrier oil.  Massage therapy using essential oil blends are great for relieving stress, anxiety, migraines, insomnia, arthritis, muscular and joint pain and to soothe the nervous system.
