Choosing Chairs: 7 Things To Consider

Chairs are an essential piece of furniture in our homes. When buying a chair, there are often more factors to consider than many people realise. Here are just some of the key things to consider when choosing a chair.

What is its purpose?

The purpose of any chair is to keep you comfortable while sitting on it. But there are different styles of chair for different rooms and tasks. Office chairs and gaming chairs are designed for use at a desk or in front of a console when you are sat upright. Armchairs are designed for relaxing back in. Rocking chairs and hanging egg chairs can meanwhile be great for nursing babies in or helping elderly people keep their body moving. Consider what a chair will be used for in order to pinpoint the right style.

How often will it be used?

Some chairs may be sat in for long periods of each day such as a desk chair in a home office or a sofa in a living room. Others may only rarely get sat in such as a chair in a guest room. Consider investing more money into chairs that are going to be heavily used – as these chairs need to be more durable. Meanwhile, keep the cost down when shopping for chairs that will only be seldomly used.

What’s your budget?

Your budget will determine whether you can splash out on an Italian leather designer wingback armchair or whether you’re better off settling for a synthetic leather generic brand armchair. Have a clear figure in mind before you start shopping. If you’re willing to buy a chair on finance, make sure you consider how much you’re willing to spend each month.

How much space have you got?

Some seating is large and takes up lots of space. This includes huge sectional sofas and throne-like armchairs. Other furniture is more compact and ideal for smaller spaces. When it comes to dining room chairs, you can even consider stackable chairs or collapsible chairs – helping you to free up floor space when these chairs are not in use.

What colour?

Chairs come in many different colours. Different colours may have different practical pros and cons, as well as creating a different mood. For example, the likes of these brown dining chairs give off a sophisticated vibe while helping to hide marks and stains. White dining chairs could contrastingly brighten up a dining room, but may get more easily stained and marked.

Have you got pets or kids?

Some furniture materials are not ideal if you have pets or kids. Velvet will quickly get destroyed by spillages or animal claws. Synthetic microfiber is much easier to clean and doesn’t scratch easily, making it a good seating surface option for homes with pets and kids.

Will it come assembled?

Some chairs and sofas come pre-assembled. If they are large, you need to consider whether they will be able to get into your home and if you will need to get them delivered by professionals. Flat-pack furniture requires you to assemble it and can save you money on delivery – you may be able to buy it in a store and take it home in your car, while also being able to get it into your home easily, however you will need the time and patience to then build it.
