How To Get Physically And Mentally Ready For Your First Day At A New Job

Starting a new job, no matter how many times you’ve done it, never really seems to get any less terrifying on the first day. You’re nervous – and that’s perfectly fine. You’re starting a new chapter in life, taking on a new challenge, with new surroundings and new people. As mentioned earlier, being nervous is fine. It shows you care. You really want this to go well, hoping you make a really good first impression, personally and professionally.

However, it’s very important to make sure the nerves don’t get the better of you, and that you give yourself every advantage possible in preparedness for your first day. So, in this article we’ll run through a few tips to get yourself both physically and mentally prepared for your first big day in your brand new job so that everything that you can control goes off without a hitch!

Sleep is Important

We’ve all been here, sometimes it’s hard to get to sleep the night before you start. But it’s so important to try. Make sure to try and get an early night, if possible start a routine 3 days before, to get your sleep pattern acclimated. Do whatever relaxes you before bedtime, whether that’s taking a bath, having a hot night time beverage, using your lavender diffuser – whatever the case may be. You’ll absolutely need sleep. You’re going to need to be laser focused the next day, taking in new information, whether you’re working in an office in a marketing team, or in a giant warehouse around chemical storage tanks, you need to be focused and ready to learn.

Get a Meal Before You Start

Depending on the type of job you’ve taken, you can start at any time – but let’s assume for this case, that your hours are the standard 9am – 5pm. Make sure you eat breakfast. It’s an age old cliche, but breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. Despite this, it’s usually the most overlooked among people. Having breakfast prepares you physically and mentally for the day, can help the ability to focus and keeps you energised. It doesn’t have to be gargantuan, like a massive fry-up, but maybe some cereal, or fruit, or yoghurt – something nutritious to start your day on a positive note.

Prepare Your Clothes and Belongings The Day Before

Make sure your clothes for your first day are ready the day before you start. It’s one less thing to worry about in the morning, and should really prevent you from rushing around on your first morning, which is always good to avoid. Make sure whatever needs to be washed is washed, dried, ironed (if applicable) and hung up ready in front of your wardrobe if you can. Make sure your bag is as ready as can be too, if you need a notepad, pen, calculator, whatever the case may be, get your bag prepared and set everything out in a safe, visible place from where you sleep. Waking up without the worry of finding anything will do wonders for your mental wellbeing on the day.
