How Women’s Fashion Has Changed Over the Last 50 Years
The history of women’s fashion is fascinating. It isn’t just which items of clothing were the most popular. Fashion reflects what society – and people – were like at the time. We decided to take a look back and see just how much has changed during the last 50 years.
1970s
Believe it or not, the ‘70s were 50 years ago. This decade saw some iconic moments for fashion. From the boho styles of bell-bottoms and peasant blouses to shorter hemlines and big boots. Women’s skirts could be a reflection of their fashion role models. Joni Mitchell, Cher, and David Bowie were all icons. The hippie movement was still going strong and floral prints were everywhere.
1980s
Next up we have the ‘80s. This was a decade where everything was big: from hair and jewellery to shoulder pads and prints. Plenty of people will look back at this era and shudder at their wardrobe choices, however, some iconic trends started then that we’re still seeing today. Boxed blazers, high waisted jeans, and sequins were all popular looks. Admittedly, certain pieces deserve to stay there. We’ll take activewear over legwarmers, thank you.
1990s
‘90s fashion was an eclectic mix of grunge and delicate. Just like with all the decades gone, music played a huge part in dictating was popular within the fashion industry. The ‘90s saw Nirvana hit the scene and as a result, the grunge look rocketed in popularity. Alongside this, Kate Moss was frequently spotted in her signature slip dress. Women could pick whichever aesthetic they wanted to style.
2000s
Just like the decades before it – the ’00s had hit and miss moments when it came to fashion. Velour tracksuits had their time in the sun thanks to Paris Hilton in the Simple Life. There were skirts and dresses worn over jeans. Military jackets became prominent and camo prints could be found everywhere. Thankfully, we can leave disc belts in this era.
2010 and Onwards
Fashion became more diverse. Nowadays we tend to borrow trends we liked from each era. Borrowing the best bits to create some signature looks. 2021 looks like it’s set to be another iconic year for fashion with goth, bubblegum pink, and bold prints are going to be on-trend.
Fashion trends are not just found on the runways. They’re in music, society, and history. It’s exciting to think what’s going to happen next. What do you think women’s fashion will change in the future?
