Ideas to make your bathroom flooring more interesting

When designing a bathroom, there are lots of things to think about. There are countless options for wall tiles, bath, shower and sink designs and how your storage options are going to be set out. After all of these options to go through, it can often feel like everything is done for your bathroom. However, the bathroom flooring still needs to be taken into account.

Because some flooring options are totally unsuitable for bathrooms, carpets are an example of this, people often choose a more practical option. Vinyl is great for bathrooms because of its soft feel underfoot while still being water-resistant and easy to clean. However, after the number of choices which have had to be made when designing a bathroom, some people may go for the simplest option. This is a shame because there are some really exciting things you can do with your bathroom floor, and we’re going to share some ideas on how to do this.

Don’t think stone automatically

If a bathroom floor doesn’t just have a generic coloured vinyl tile on the floor, they can often have tiles which look like stone. There is no doubt that stone can look fantastic on a bathroom floor, but to create a design which is more exciting and interesting, it’s worth considering other options.

Wood-style flooring is definitely something more people should consider for their bathroom. While real wood floors present practical problems with the amount of water being used in a bathroom, vinyl tiles have developed to resemble a wide variety of wood options closely. Traditional wood flooring patterns can work really well in bathrooms, and if you choose a light-coloured wood, it can give the room a spa-like feel.

Don’t be afraid of the dark

Because bathroom windows are often not entirely transparent for privacy reasons, the amount of light coming into a bathroom is reduced. This can lead to light colours being used for the bath, sinks, walls and floors to help compensate. Darker floors are not something you see a lot of with bathrooms but can look fantastic when done correctly.

As mentioned above, you could go for a wood floor style floor and choose a really dark, almost black colour. If you do want to go for a stone style floor, a dark grey can look really good. The aim of a dark floor is to create some contrast between the other light colours in the bathroom, and this can create a really interesting and quite different look for your bathroom.

Patterns can be really effective

As with the choice of colour for wood or stone style tiles, there are different patterns you can bring into your bathroom, and they can be really effective. Unlike in other rooms where patterns or a variety of different colours are present, bathrooms often present almost a blank canvas.

Modern geometric patterns with a variety of matching tonal colours can produce an interesting and quite different flooring design for your bathroom. You could choose to go with a blue tonal flooring pattern to reflect the colour commonly associated with water.

A more traditional pattern would be a black and white tiled design which can be recreated with vinyl tiles or ceramic tiles depending on your preference. There is a wide variety of black and white tile designs with some bringing in more modern patterns, so there are lots to choose from.

Hopefully, the ideas we’ve highlighted above give you something to think about next time you’re changing your bathroom floor. As with any interior design, it should reflect your personality and taste, so if you want to go big and bold with your bathroom floor, then go for it!
