Inspirational Women: Isabella Artois
Belgian Beer company Stella Artois is 600 years old this year and to celebrate they have launched a new campaign ‘Be Legacy’ which explores the founders of the brewery Sebastian and Isabella Artois. The brand has been traced back to the original Den Hoorn brewery in the town of Leuven, Belgium.
In 1717 Brewmaster Sebastian Artois sold everything he had to fulfill his dream – to own a brewery which he won at auction. Sebastian went about building the Artois brand and developing its well known pilsner beer. Unfortunately Sebastian died in 1726 leaving the brewery with no-one at the reigns and the future of the company looked bleak.
Todd Allen, global vice president of Stella Artois, said: “You can only have a Legacy when you leave something for the next generation to enjoy, but it’s not just about fame; it’s about creating something tangible that others can appreciate.”
Against all the odds Sebastian’s widow Isabella took up the reigns and rescued the brewery and business in a time when women were seen as nothing much more than a man’s property. Stepping up to the challenge Isabella defied all expectations for a women of the day and left her mark on the world by making the Artois brewery a success, ensuring that the Stella Artois name lives on today.
Todd Allen goes on to say that “Sebastian and Isabella Artois both made decisions that had a huge impact on Stella Artois’ history and success that is still being enjoyed today. Although these events took place centuries ago, their stories show a determination and ability to break through barriers that are still very relevant and inspiring for people today.”
Sebastian and Isabella have been brought to life on the Stella Artois Be Legacy hub and on the Stella Artois YouTube channel.
