Introducing WUKA’s Reusable Period Pads

One of my favourite revolutions in the last few years has been the introduction of reusable period products. I have fully joined this revolution and was very happy to wave goodbye to disposable pads and tampons forever.

I was never a big fan of disposable products to begin with, and the alternatives available today make it so much more comfortable, easier, cheaper and more environmentally friendly than ever. A few years ago I stopped buying disposable products and bought myself a set of period pants from WUKA.

WUKA (Wake Up Kick Ass) is a female-led period care brand that makes period underwear and activewear which completely replaces the need for tampons and pads because periods shouldn’t cost you the earth. Equality, social and environmental responsibility are at the heart of everything they do. WUKA has been passionate about smashing taboos and innovation in sustainability and menstrual health.

Their products replace plastic-riddled disposable pads and tampons with comfortable and sustainable period underwear. Disposal of single-use menstrual products – tampons, pads and applicators generates 200,000 tonnes of waste per year! As many as 51 trillion microplastic particles – 500 times more than the stars in our galaxy —litter our oceans and seas, seriously threatening marine wildlife.

A study by Plan International UK, from a survey of 1000 14 – 21 yr olds, found that 10% of
girls could not afford menstrual products. The study also found that 12% of girls had to
improvise menstrual wear due to affordability issues and 14% had to ask to borrow
menstrual products from a friend.

Whereas I might have otherwise used more than 11,000 disposable menstrual products, costing over £18,000 in my lifetime I now have a lovely set of period pants and less guilt about the impact my menstrual cycle has on my bank balance and the planet.

Today, I am not here to talk about period pants. Today I am here to talk to you about a brand new product WUKA is launching today, their reusable pads. I have tried reusable pads in the past and found them to be a bit cumbersome, so I was excited to try out these new ones and compare.

The WUKA reusable pad is made from offcut fabric from WUKA’s award-winning period underwear, they are super soft, washable, reusable and boast absorbant COOLMAX® technology which protects against leaks and odour. The pads use handy poppers to secure them to any underwear and offer no slipping or chafing. They can fully replace disposable pads, tampons and pantyliners for up to 8 hours at a time. There are no added chemicals, perfumes or nasties.

When it comes to washing and reusing the pads, they come with a handy laundry bag which keeps period pants, reusable pads and other underwear safe from catching on other garments in a normal wash cycle. It even comes with a little cover to keep the zip from catching anything else. The bag is also handy to store used pants and pads between washes.

I think that the reusable pads from WUKA are a really great product, from an environmental and financial angle as well as offering a great solution to keep in your handbag for when you’re on the go and caught unawares. I am happy to award them 5 out of 5 stars.
