One of my favourite things about London is its eclectic personality and style. Having been influenced by a multitude of cultures, events and people over its lifetime the city always surprises me with its mix of old and new. This year was expected to be a boundary-pushing year for interiors with cheery colours, mixed patterns and motifs and I have not been disappointed!
Check out my favourite London home trends from this year.
Untreated Walls
Now industrial style isn’t for everyone and although I sometimes dismiss the harsh, cold look as a bit of a fad some of the trends from this year, like untreated walls, I can really get behind. Although it’s not for the faint-hearted, plastered walls and exposed brickwork can look fantastic in the right space for a fuss-free interior look which will be bound to get people talking. If you have painted walls then don’t be afraid to strip them down and get back to basics. The au naturel style is one that I really love.
Maps
There’s something magical about maps, as someone who enjoys graphic design I can appreciate their strange beauty. Not only are they practical to help you find your way but this year they have been helping people find a new sense of style too. It is super easy to incorporate maps into your home; from dramatic supersized wallpaper to soft furnishings and quirky accessories like an antique-style globe, geography has never been so stylish.
Mandalas
I have always loved the beauty of mehndi and have always been super jealous of people who are able to draw such elegant designs so I simply love the trend of incorporating the Mandala, a spiritual and ritual symbol from Hindu and Buddhist cultures which represents wholeness, into interiors. I have spotted the Mandala design printed on candles, rugs and throws as well as featured on a wide range of accessories and even stencilled onto wood flooring which just looks amazing!
Floors
This year we notice London homes making a big statement with wooden flooring by displaying a range of colours from dark and sumptuous to more subtle lighter colours that complement furniture and accessories. I think natural engineered wood flooring is a great choice because it is made from layers of wood to make it extra durable with the top layer being of the highest quality to give the desired look and it gives you the opportunity to install underfloor heating, a bonus in winter! When it comes to texture why not try the trendy wire-brushed effect which really draws the eye and emphasizes the floor.
Outside In
Pantone’s verdant colour of the year for 2017, Greenery, has really sent the botanical trend into orbit this year. Everyone is clambering to bring the outside into their homes from colour palettes to fantastic displays of plants, both real and faux. I love the contemporary design statement of a vertical garden which is a practical solution for indoor gardening when space is at a premium. Alternatively, I have loved seeing trellises adorned with mix-and-match style pots of ferns, peace lily, begonias and vines bringing nature into the home offering balance to our modern day, busy lives.
Bronze
Newsflash, brass is out. The good news is we have a new shiny material to take its place this year; bronze. This metal has a sophisticated effect with delightful warming rosy hues that I think is perfect for Autumn. It combines well with a wide range of finishes and colours as well as both light and darker interior schemes. Try bronze with a trendy forest green or deep navy shades for an elegant, luxurious effect. If you’re keen to hang onto your copper accessories then mix and match with burnished and shiny bronze for a chic look. Add bronze to your living space with elegant mirrors and metallic accessories and dress your dining space with bronze cutlery, dinnerware, glassware!
