Reasons to Renovate Rather Than Move
There has always been a strong argument as to whether it is better to renovate your home or just call it quits and move completely, but the answer is probably dependent on what you want to get out of the result.
If it is the location that is causing you a problem, maybe there are parking issues, and no way of rectifying it, or the neighbourhood is not what you first thought it was, or, as this article from the TUC shows, your commute is proving to be too long or too busy with traffic, then moving is probably the best or only solution.
If, however, it is due to space within your home, then there could be a strong argument supporting the renovation option. For more reasons why Brits renovate their homes click here.
There are other factors within the to move or renovate argument other than those mentioned above, and they are:
Is it cost-effective?
It does cost a lot to move nowadays. When you think about all the different factors and businesses involved, it all tots up. There are the estate agent fees, solicitors fees, hiring of vans from removal companies, and buying of packing boxes, just to mention a few of the costs involved, and none of these are cheap.
You then have the expenses which are not money based such as the stress and anxiety, not to mention the strain on relationships whilst this is all taking place, of finding the next home to everybody’s taste and in the right location.
When it comes to selling, you also have the added stress of being let down by your buyer and losing the whole moving chain and having to start the whole thing again.
Are you adding value to your home?
By spending some or all of the money you were going to spend on moving to renovate your home, you could be adding so much value that it would be worth more than the houses you are looking at actually moving to.
This could save all the stress and anxiety of moving but still end up with the bigger house, in a location you already know, without the added hassle of having to do a change of address to all and sundry. Adding value to your home is not just about an extension or loft conversion, though if you are looking to add space, there are other cheaper options like getting an interior designer on board to make the rooms or space seem bigger. There are many different ways in which you can add value to your home and make it more desirable to yourself as well as others.
Should you add a new kitchen?
Putting in a designer kitchen can put a lot of money on the value of your home. And if you design a completely new layout for your kitchen, change the flooring and the wall coverings, this could make a world of difference to you too.
… and what about the bathroom?
Nothing says luxury like a beautiful bathroom. You could change the layout of this room, too, as well as the suite, flooring and walls. Having a clean, new, modern bathroom can really add the wow factor and may very well make you think twice about that move.
