Review: Breakfast At The Wolseley

If you look at lists of top things to do in London there’s a good chance that Breakfast At The Wolseley will be there. I was lucky enough to have had the chance to experience this for myself during a blogger event my team at work recently held for Farfetch.

The Wolseley is a café-restaurant in the grand European tradition located on Piccadilly. You might think that this amazing building was designed o be a mecca for diners from the off, but you might be surprised that it was in fact commissioned in 1921 by Wolseley Motors Limited to be a prestigious car showroom!

Drawing on Venetian and Florentine influences, the architect William Curtis Green incorporated Eastern exotic touches to the building’s towering pillars, arches and stairways to great a grand an impressive interior. After changing hand and purposes a number of times the building was restored and renovated and opened in 2003 as The Wolseley café-restaurant (and very glad we are too!)

Breakfast At The Wolseley is served from 7:00 – 11:30 am on week days and the menu boasts a wide range of options from home-made Viennoiserie (pastries), classic egg dishes, full English breakfast as well as fruit, yoghurts and cereals. Once sat at our generously sized table we selected drinks – I went for a pineapple juice and a latte to get me caffeinated for the day! The coffee was delivered to the table in beautiful crockery, with the tea being served in a beautiful silver service. I could certainly tell that the coffee was of top quality and the pineapple juice offered a hit of sweetness which I like in the morning.

When it comes to breakfast I am definitely a fan of savory. Of course being vegetarian sometimes makes this difficult as most breakfast dishes come with sausages and bacon, but I was very happy to see Eggs Florentine on the menu which I selected. As an alternative for Eggs Benedict which includes bacon,  Eggs Florentine is made up of spinach and a poached eggs served on a muffin and topped with cheese sauce. I ordered a large, meaning 2 eggs and they arrived standing proudly on the branded Wolseley plate looking very precisely put together.

The acid test for a poached egg dish is to see if the yolk is still runny and I am happy to report that indeed it was! The egg was perfectly cooked and was complemented by the delicious rich creamy sauce and the blanched spinach. I really loved the thick and satisfying English muffin on which the ingredients sat and I happily demolished every morsel on the plate.

I am very much looking forward to returning to The Wolseley soon for another blogger meeting and I look forward to trying out something different from the menu next time. I am happy to award breakfast at The Wolseley 5 out of 5 stars for being moreish and delicious with the additional bonus of a grand and luxurious setting. Definitely a must-do for London.
