Review: GBK Veg-Out Burger

GBK Veg Out Burger

Being a vegetarian I love when restaurants add new veggie friendly items to their menus, so when I spotted well-known burger joint GBK advertising a new Veg-Out Burger I just had to give it a go.

GBK was founded in 2001 by three guys from New Zealand including chef Peter Gordon. There are more than 70 GBK restaurants across the UK and the pride themselves on serving handcrafted burgers using quality meat combined with fresh ingredients and sauces made from scratch.

GBK actually is pretty good for vegetarians, usually having 3-4 meat-free options on their menu. They actually put some effort into their recipes which is refreshing as a lot of places do the minimum when it comes to veggie food.

The Veg-Out Burger (£8.75) is made up of layers of grilled aubergine, sweet potato, pea and feta croquettes, chermoula (a mixture of herbs, oil, lemon juice, pickled lemons, garlic, cumin, and salt) yoghurt, garlic mayo, Cajun relish and salad.

This is certainly an impressive plateful when it arrives on the table. You don’t really expect there to be croquettes in your veggie burger, do you? The good news is that they are crunchy, delicious parcels that go really well with the epic chermoula yoghurt sauce (I would pay good money to have this in a bottle), whereas the Cajun relish compliments the smoky aubergine and gives the whole plate a kick.

I really enjoyed my Veg-Out Burger from GBK. It is a great way to celebrate humble vegetables with a selection of textures, and flavours which are really brought out and enhanced by the two delicious sauces.

I award the GBK Veg-Out Burger 5 out of 5 stars and would recommend it to anyone looking for a meat-free option which is delectable and satisfying.
