Review: Lunch at Lady Luck in Canterbury
A little while ago now I spent the weekend in Canterbury with my boyfriend, Steve and we enjoyed exploring the shops and sights of this beautiful Kent city. Between our activities, we enjoyed some downtime and refreshments at Canterbury’s pubs and restaurants.
Being vegan I had done some investigation into vegan-friendly restaurants in Canterbury and discovered The Lady Luck, a self-proclaimed rock ‘n’ roll bar not far from the city centre serving a large range of vegetarian and vegan dishes (check out the menu here). I was sold, it sounded right up my alley so I booked a table.
The Lady Luck is a unique and friendly pub with a jukebox showcasing some of the best in rock n roll, punk & metal bands from the 1950’s to the present day. The bar has a big range of real ales, ciders, craft beers, cocktails and specialist rums. During the day The Lady Luck serves freshly prepared homemade food including a wide range of vegetarian and vegan options whereas the evenings play host to regular events such as dj nights and live music.
When we walked into the bar I knew I was going to like the place with it’s in your face red and black decor and records adorning the walls. We were shown to a table and checked out the menu. It is so nice to go anywhere that has enough of a vegan range that you don’t end up being stuck with only one choice!
I quickly decided I was going to try the Southern Jack Stack for my main: homemade Southern Fried Jackfruit fillet topped with melted vegan cheese with homemade BBQ pulled Jackfruit. Served with thick-cut chips with salad.
For his main Steve decided to go for the Southern Fried Jack burger: homemade Southern fried ‘chicken’ style Jackfruit fillet with garlic mayo and chips. I also managed to talk Steve into trying the vegan nachos as a starter: crisp tortilla chips covered in melted vegan cheese and spring onions plus homemade roasted red pepper salsa, vegan sour cream and jalapenos.
I was really excited to try the food and when the nachos arrived I couldn’t wait to dive in. I have to admit that I am a bit lazy when it comes to making food at home and whenever I have tried to make my own nachos I tend to only use a basic salsa as it’s a bit of a fuss to make my own vegan-friendly guacamole (most store stuff has dairy in it) or to make or find vegan-friendly melty cheese. I dove straight into the nachos when they arrived and revelled in their crunch, heat and creaminess. A job well done, and the perfect portion size for a shared starter.
I have to admit I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I ordered the Jack Stack but I knew I loved jackfruit so would surely love whatever appeared and I wasn’t disappointed. I was served a delicious BBQ flavoured slab of jackfruit topped with vegan cheese and delectable pulled jackfruit with chips and salad. Steve was equally as delighted with his jackfruit burger which looked great and satisfying. This was perfect comfort food!
I really loved both the food and the atmosphere at The Lady Luck in Canterbury and will certainly be returning to try some of their other tasty plant-based dishes. I award them 5 out of 5 stars and can’t wait to be back.
