Review: Recoleta Criolla Grande Red Wine

I have to admit that when it comes to wine I am a bit of a novice. I very much like what I like and don’t often branch out and try wine from different regions with different grapes very often, so when I was offered the chance to review some wine from Independent Wine I was excited and a little nervous to see what new wines might come my way.

Independent Wine supports small, boutique winemakers, buying directly from them so you get to taste these outstanding quality wines without the added cost of the middle-man. They always pay a fair price to the vineyard so they don’t squeeze small winemakers for every penny of profit. As far as Independent Wine is concerned, this is the ethical way forward for the fine wine business.

These small winemakers dedicated their time to crafting fine wines which are their lives and they devote all their time to their product, meticulously fine-tuning each step of the wine-making process to create truly delicious wines.

I often drink wine from Italy so when I was sent a bottle of Argentinian red wine to try I was excited at the prospect or something new. The Recoleta Criolla Grande is described as a dry red wine, very fruity, refreshing and fun to drink.

For this review, I invited my sister Nikki and our mutual friend Iggy to taste alongside me as they have wider experience than I when it comes to wine. All three of us enjoyed the 2019 Recoleta Criolla Grande which has a pleasant acidity balanced with fruity sweetness of red cherry, strawberry and raspberry with a of spice.

I really loved the colour of the wine, a pale ruby colour which was particularly eye-catching and a hint at the fruity flavour to come. My sister described the Recoleta Criolla Grande as definitely not a complex wine and Iggy conquered saying the lightness and low alcohol makes it the perfect casual drink for sharing with friends on a hot summer day in the garden which I think is the epitome of civilised.

The wine is best served lightly chilled at 10-13 ° C and be sure to store in a cool place, away from direct sunlight, bright artificial light or heat sources.

Overall, the Recoleta Criolla Grande was a nice drink with a good balance, short finish and fruity flavour. Independent Wine suggests it pairs well with slightly spicy dishes, risotto or chicken.

We award the 2019 Recoleta Criolla Grande 4 out of 5 stars.
