Salisbury Market

I love markets they are such dynamic, exciting, colourful places where you can indulge in a little retail therapy and at the same time support local businesses. The Salisbury Market is certainly one of those places, set in the Market Square of the city there are numerous stalls with offerings from shoes and cosmetics to meat, veg, plants and books!

Every year when we visit Salisbury we pop down to the market which happens every Tuesday and Saturday to visit our favourite stalls. Every year my parents go to the market to purchase shoes and clothes suitable for their out door pursuits (they are involved in metal detecting and archeology) and this year was no different as they visited the Regatta Clothing stall.

One of my favourite stalls is Thee Olive Tree which, as you can probably guess, sell a range of delicious edible treats mainly based around olives – one of my top treats. This year we got pots of garlic stuffed olives, harissa covered olives, sun dried tomato stuffed olives and olives stuffed with a delicious blue cheese. I had never had the harissa or blue cheese olives before and they were both delicious – although the harissa ones were surprisingly hot at times!

I have the biggest book fettish – I love reading, and the market happens to have a great second hand book stall which I have spent much time at over the years. I have a huge collection of Steven King books from this stall, and as I mentioned in my post about Camping in Salisbury having a good pile of books to read whilst under canvas is a must. Although these days I rely on my Kindle to keep me entertained I am still fond of the book stall.

At the moment the Salisbury Market Square is undergoing some refurbishments and so there is not space to hold the full market as it has been before. The plans involve sprucing up the pavement and re-organising the space. What with the traditional pubs, restaurants and the market stalls the Market Square is a lively spot where I really enjoy visiting and look forward to going back again next year.
