The Dos and Don’ts of Packing – Tips for a Smooth Move

Moving house can be a notoriously tricky process. There are a lot of different logistical challenges that need to be considered, from how you’ll organise your packing to changing over all of your utilities. While it’s always going to be difficult, there’s definitely a lot that you can do to make things run more smoothly – here are some of our top dos and don’ts.

Do label everything

It’s true that the moving day will be perhaps the most hectic day of the move, but it’s not all over after that – you still need to unpack. By labeling everything, clearly marking each box so you know what’s inside and where it should go, you can make things a lot easier for yourself later on.

Don’t leave it to the last minute

While it can be tempting to push things back, there’s simply so much to organise during a move that you can’t afford to leave it to the last minute. Make sure that you spread the packing out over several weeks, booking up essential services early on so that you’re sure nothing is fully booked up.

Do hire a removals team

One of the simplest things you can do to ensure a smooth move is to hire a removals team such as Bright Movers. They’ll be able to help you box things up, get all of your big and awkwardly shaped pieces of furniture into their lorry, and then take it to your new home. You’ll save a lot of time, and can probably avoid straining your back as well.

Don’t forget to take enough time off work

It’s easy to underestimate how tiring packing and the move can be. In most cases, it will be necessary to take a few days off from work, so that you have time to settle in a little. It can be frustrating having to use some of your holiday ‘just’ to move house, but if there’s no other way, it’s just something you’ll have to do.

Do take breaks when packing

While small moves might be possible in one mad dash, with bigger moves, you simply have to take some breaks. Make sure you stop for coffee, a quick sit down, and eat some good food. People aren’t machines, and you need to look after yourself.

Don’t overpack boxes

Finally, when you’re putting your possessions in boxes, try to be aware of how heavy the boxes are getting. You don’t want to just push all your pillows into one box, and then have another one full with your dumbbell collection. Not only will the box probably break when you pick it up, but it’ll also just be an absolute pain (not to mention dangerous) to pick it up and move it.

By following these simple dos and don’ts, you should be able to make the packing process go a whole lot more smoothly. Ultimately, it will still be a bit of a struggle but luckily, it isn’t something you’ll have to do all that often.
