Tips On Looking After Yourself In A Physically Demanding Role

When working in a job that demands a lot of physical activity, or exposes you to harmful substances, it’s easy to forget and forgo your own safety and well being. We, as humans, often discard some of the most basic precautions, in favour of working harder, or doing a good job, because we all want to prove our worth. Being a hard worker is brilliant, but it shouldn’t come at the cost of your own safety, or physical and mental wellbeing. It’s okay, we get it. Work culture is hard to manoeuvre. Going ‘above and beyond’ is seen as a must now by a lot of employers, and sadly sometimes expected, and it starts with the small things, like staying a little longer after allotted hours. Now, we’re not saying don’t be a team player, but you also have to take into account your own capabilities, and ensure you’re keeping a respectable work/personal life balance. So, here are a few tips on looking after yourself in a physically demanding job.

Use The PPE Provided To You

This may sound like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised at how many people cut corners here, for the sake of doing a job quicker. PPE is there for your safety. Not only that, but the companies safety as well, as they can face fines and other consequences, if employees are ever found not using appropriate equipment by auditing bodies, or if someone injures themselves, the likelihood is they’ll blame it on the company. So yes, while it might take a little longer, USE PPE. It can literally save your life. Take into account the kind of work you’re doing. For example, if you work in a chemical factory that houses a lot of chemical storage tanks that you may need to approach, think of what is in these tanks. Harmful liquids like acids and sulphates, which can be extremely harmful to you if made direct contact with.

Know Your Physical LimitBack injuries are some of the most common injuries in a workplace that demands a lot of physical activity. A lot of these injuries could be prevented just by thinking about your own limits, but also following procedures that have been provided. Use the aids given to you. Ask yourself “Do I need to lift that alone? Is there an easier way?” Make sure you’re applying manual handling training correctly, such as when lifting objects. You should always be using your knees to lift, never your back. Don’t be shy about calling for assistance.

Manage Your Time In And Out Of Work

Being a team player is amazing, and is what makes the job easier for everyone – it’s also a sure fire way to be liked and respected by your colleagues. But remember that you also need a balance. Working too many hours puts a toll on you physically and mentally. Make sure you’re taking your breaks allotted, it actually helps with productivity. Don’t be a hero unnecessarily. Staying past your hours here and there is fine, but make sure that you’re considering your own health when making those decisions. It sounds harsh, but remember, you’re no use to anyone if you’re burned out.
