Top 3 UK Spots to Experience Winter Magic

Make your Christmas holiday extra special this year with a visit to one of these spectacular UK destinations which come into their own in winter.

  1. Edinburgh

No one does winter quite like the Scots. Old rituals such as marking the winter solstice and burning rowan branches combine with more recent traditions like Burns Night for a season rich in celebration. Edinburgh, the country’s capital, is a great place to experience these events and more.

During December, the city is made magical by Christmas markets illuminated with colourful lights. Stroll between the stalls and shop for artisan crafts and authentic festive cuisine from local suppliers and visitors from countries across Europe. There are also rides to help keep younger members of your party entertained!

The historic Royal Mile also glitters during the festive period: begin at Edinburgh Castle and walk the stretch at leisure, marvelling at the beautiful architecture beneath the glow. You can also climb to Arthur’s Seat to enjoy panoramic city views which are at their best at this time of year.

If you’re travelling over the Christmas holidays, don’t miss the spectacular Hogmanay (New Year) celebrations! In Scotland, they last well into the morning of the 1st January which is why residents benefit from an extra bank holiday at the beginning of the year!

  • The Cotswolds

For a slower-paced escape, The Cotswolds is an idyllic destination. Characterised by a quintessential English countryside of undulating hills, great swathes of farmland and patches of forest, it’s a scenic backdrop for a romantic getaway.

Cosy up in one of the many luxurious hotels across The Cotswolds with your significant other, enjoying the scenes of misty fields, glimmering lakes and deer running through the grass. Food is a real highlight here, so make the most of the fresh local produce either in traditional pubs or the more modern Michelin-star restaurants which are sure to wow.

During the day, go on gentle walks along well-marked trails through this timeless winter scene. Refuel at one of the many quaint tea rooms or town markets overflowing with local goods. There is a wealth of heritage sites here too from abbeys and castles to grand houses in beautiful gardens.

  • North Wales

If spectacular scenery is what you’re after, North Wales should be top of your list. A glorious coastline of deep blue water running into golden sand and towering cliffs awaits, backed by small fishing villages where you can feel totally removed from the stresses of daily life. Inland is Eryri National Park, crowned by the majestic Snowdonia mountain.

When exploring outdoors on the public trails, be aware of weather warnings and avoid doing challenging coastal hikes or hill climbs in rain, high wind, sleet or snow. You have the option of working with personal injury solicitors in the event of slips or falls that aren’t your fault, but you don’t want to risk an accident. When bad weather strikes, head to one of the lively restaurants or bars for live music and hearty warming food and drinks.

Travelling with children? Look up the best sledging spots – there’s plenty to choose from – or let them burn off excitable Christmas energy on exhilarating guided outdoor adventure activities like rafting and mountain biking.
